Kids. Interrupt. Every. Two. Seconds. They don’t care if you’re sick, if you’re busy, if you’ve got an important deadline, if you’re really in the flow of what you are doing, or even if you need to pee… they do not care. And they definitely don’t care that the sacrament is supposed to be mom’s quiet meditation time with Jesus.

I have not mastered this (I admit my kids are screaming “MOM!” as I type,) but the Mindfulness idea that meditation is not about uninterrupted laser focus, it’s the cyclical process of getting distracted, catching the distraction, and coming back to awareness, helps me not lose my mind during the sacrament.

“Mom, the cheerios fell all over the floor.” (Okay, full disclosure, fruit loops.) “Mom, make me a paper airplane.” “Mom, I want to sit next to you, Kevin won’t let me sit next to you, scoot OVER KEVIN!!.” “Mom, dad is asleep.” “Mom, why did Jesus die anyway?” Ahhhh…. the distraction is part of the cycle of meditation not a deviation from it.

This is how it’s supposed to be.

Are you a mom of littles who is trying to stay emotionally and spiritually grounded amidst kid-chaos? In therapy I can show you some mindfulness practices that will activate a parasympathetic response when your nervous system is overwhelmed. In other words, those kids don't scare me - we've got this!
