For the mom planning a child’s birthday party: God Bless You

I remember seeing Michelle and Barack Obama interviewed before the run for presidency. She shared about a day where he came home from his job at the senate, after working on brokering some nuclear-arms-reduction-deal-plan-thingy, and asked how he could help prepare their daughters upcoming birthday party. Michelle outlined all the things that needed to happen for it, and he said "well, goody bags, I could do that." She retorted, "Oh no. No. Goody bags are very complicated, there's a party theme and you can't have it be too babyish and some children have allergies, and then you have to have girl bags and boy bags, yeah, no, that's just too complicated for you to take on." He laughed that he could work on nuclear arms reduction but not the goody bags.

I totally relate.

Sometimes I just get flooded by it all. And we’re talking goody bags, people. 

Oprah interviewed a woman who traveled deep into tribal African communities to speak out against culturally sanctioned domestic violence. I have no doubt she got some push-back on her message. Not to mention the inconvenient hassles of traveling in isolated places. Oprah asked how she didn’t, frankly, lose her mind. Her response was simple and lovely. Every morning she sits on the ground and meditates. She reminds herself of her connection to the earth, and of the strength mother earth gives to her. 

Christ says that He is the vine. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love…. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:5-11 NIV.

As we create some space to sit in prayer, or meditation, we can remind ourselves of our connection to that vine. We are an extension of Him, and through Him we are connected to the Father Himself. When we are united with Him, we are empowered and joyful. Grounded and energized, we can tackle even goody bags.
