You can get anything on Amazon these days - even willpower.  For real!  Have you seen this product:  Kitchen Safe Time Locking Container.  It’s an impenetrable clear box that you can put your “vice” into, lock, and set a timer for when you can open it again.  It’s Friday night and you have no self control around the lime flavored Dorito chips?  Pull out a handful then quickly lock the rest in the box ‘til Monday morning.  Need your husband to get off his phone so you can have an actual conversation?  Put that bad boy in the box and set the timer for 15 minutes.  (Meaning the phone, not your husband.  They’d need a bigger box for that.)  The kids have lost video game privileges?  Put that console in the box and set the lock to open when they’re 18!

The reviews are awesome:  “I bought 10 of these things.”  Really?  10?!  “What if your kids put the cat in there?”  Bad.  Very bad.  “There is no way to override the locking mechanism...  Trust me.”

What would you put in the box?

It made me think about the things I would want to “lock away” for a day - not just the junk food for my body, but the junk food for my soul too.  Maybe not forever (I’m not yet that healthy... nor enlightened) but just for a day.  Some things I could throw in the box easily - like taxes.  Ooops, it’s locked away - can’t work on that for the next 24 hours, too bad, so sad.  Other things I have mixed feelings about, like my phone.  Yes!  No more calls!  No more mindless web surfing.  Crap, where’s my phone?  Did I seriously lock it in that box?!  23 hours and 57 minutes to go!!??  NOOOO!!!!

In a sense, God’s already created a box like this for us, it’s called the Sabbath.  What mindless “junk food” can you “lock in the box” and stay away from  ...Just for one day?  It’s interesting how when the lime chips and chocolate bars aren’t an option, the other stuff in the cupboard is not just more visible, it’s more palatable.  The sabbath is similarly an opportunity to practice detoxing from the “junk” of the world to get clarity about how sweet the gospel really is.

A sabbath lock box for the soul... with no Amazon shipping fees!
